Beihang University (formerly Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics) or BUAA for short, was established in 1952, was the first university of aeronautical and astronautical engineering and academic research throughout China. Early in the 1950s, BUAA became known as the 16 key universities in China. In the 1990s, BUAA was ranked among the 14 key universities in China.

The university comprises 23 schools and departments, covering such diverse fields as science, technology, liberal arts, law, economy, management, philosophy, foreign languages and education. Total faculty and staff number more than 3,499, including 14 academicians of either the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering Sciences, 26 Changjiang Scholars. At present 30,000 students are enrolled in BUAA and among them 10,000 are graduates. There are 44 fields lead to doctoral degree, 70 fields lead to master degree and 43 specialties leading to bachelor degree for foreign students. There are 21 research institutes, 16 interdisciplinary research centers and 81 laboratories in BUAA.

BUAA is qualified to admit foreign students sponsored by Chinese Government Scholarship and accepts over 500 short and long-term foreign students from more than 20 countries annually, among them 160 are studying for master or doctoral degree and more than 300 studying for Chinese Language in Chinese Training Center of BUAA. English is used as courses and instruction language for the master and doctoral programs.
